A weird reward policy.
From my brother, something that amuses me:
yay retail. used cd's, books, clothes, that kind of nonsense. the staff are mostly bohos in between cooler setups. there are permanent staff (who get paid £6/hour i think, and get trained as buyers) and casual staff (who work or don't as they choose, for a whopping £4.50/hour, yeah baby). nobody wants to come in for 10am on a sunday morning.
so there's a puncutality bonus. if you're on time for at least 70% of your shifts, then you get the bonus. it is a whopping 10% of your wages for all those shifts you made it to on time, in vouchers which can only be spent in the stores. to sweeten it a little, the bonus counts as part of your pay 'package' so it's taxable.
So if you show up on time for 70% or more of your shifts, your take-home pay is less than it would be if you just blamed the tube for your late arrivals. This does not seem designed to produce the behaviour it wants to produce. "And it definitely doesn't because people are late ALL the TIME," comments my brother.

I'm reminded of the scene in HUMAN TRAFFIC wherein a young man is bent over a table in a clothing store, a pound note (I presume a single, if there is such a thing there anymore) is stuffed in his mouth, and he's violated in his traditionally exit-only port by a sweaty, sweaty boss.
I've not seen that movie, and am fairly certain I don't want to. As John noted, the policy's "attempt at harnessing the forces of the market is charming."
